Driver Accused of Crashing Into Police Cars Charged With DUI

Oklahoma police say that a driver hit two city police cruisers on Aug. 7 while traveling on Lake Hefner Parkway near Britton Road. The incident occurred right before midnight as the cops were helping direct traffic around an earlier crash.

According to an Oklahoma City officer, the 31-year-old woman was driving south on the highway when she drifted on the road and hit a semi-truck. The impact sent her vehicle into two police cars that were on the side of the parkway. Reports say that two officers had to run towards a ditch to avoid being hit as well.

The woman suffered minor injuries. No one else was reported to have been injured. Officers say that she was intoxicated at the time of the incident, and she was detained. She was booked at the Oklahoma County Jail for DUI and failing to pay attention and devote full time to driving. Authorities did not disclose whether they requested a breath or blood test from the woman.

In Oklahoma, drivers who are convicted of DUI for the first time may be sentenced to jail for as long as one year and pay a $1,000 fine in addition to losing their driving privileges. Drivers who are convicted more than once may face higher fines and longer jail sentences.

Motorists facing charges of intoxicated driving may be able to hire a lawyer who could assume a defensive strategy in order to possibly have the charges dropped or dismissed. In some cases, the penalties may be reduced if the defendant agrees to plead guilty or no contest in a plea bargain.
